On a windy autumn day, Marla Little comes running down the hill, yelling, “Help! My giant pumpkin is rolling away! Onward it goes, rolling and turning, with no sign of stopping! Diddle-dee-doo! Oh, what shall I do?”
A little girl chases her giant pumpkin all over town with some help along the way. Featuring a cast of delightful characters with amusing expressions and beautifully illustrated with memorable scenes, you’ll love reciting “Diddle-dee-doo! Oh, what shall I do?” together with your little pumpkin.
Today I am reviewing another children’s picture book that was recently available free on Amazon. Here are my pros and cons for The Roll-Away Pumpkin:
- The book is full of beautiful autumn imagery! The gorgeous oranges, greens, browns, and reds will make you excited for fall weather.
- The human characters in the book are large, oddly shaped, and quite intriguing. Every illustration seems a bit off-kilter and I think it adds a sense of whimsy and magic to the scenes. Kudos to the illustrator Daniela Volpari for creating a unique world.
- I love how the whole town comes together to help catch the roll-away pumpkin.
- The end was abrupt and odd to me, but I don’t think kids will mind.
This is a very simple story about a girl chasing a roll-away pumpkin and the people who were helping her. The imagery is beautiful and creative and it will definitely give you autumn vibes. It is appropriate for ages 3 to 8 years old and I think it would make a great seasonal gift book.
