My Thoughts
If you have been following me at all on my blog, you know I love reading and reviewing short stories. Here is an extremely short gem from Haruki Murakami. You can read this 5 page story online (click here to read it)!

Here are my pros and cons for On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl on One Beautiful April Morning:

  1. Succinct, hopeful, and heartbreaking. There is a lot of heart and a lot of longing in this story. It is impactful… and considering its length, that is super impressive.
  2. The title definitely intrigued me. What a creative and long title for such a short story!
  3. I feel like I am gushing here… but seriously, this story is so sadly beautiful. It made me think about opportunities I’ve allowed to me pass me by and it made me want to instantly speak up and grab life by the horns rather than miss out on anything.

I think this tiny little story helps remind readers to be brave, speak up, and not let life or love pass you by. When you take a chance on love, is a negative response better or worse than never taking the chance in the first place? Thought-provoking for sure. What were your thoughts on this short story?

  1. The First Mate and I were discussing some of Haruki Murakami’s work this morning actually. I have never read any of it and he is a fan. So I thought this was timely (and short) so I read it. And aye, I agree wholeheartedly with yer review. This story was lovely. The First Mate does not think Haruki Murakami’s novels would be to me taste but this story story was. I will save it for the First Mate to read if he hasn’t already. Thanks for sharing matey!

  2. What a coincidence that you were talking about Murakami’s work as my post was going up! That is random and crazy to say the least. I am familiar with Murakami but I’ve never read any of his stuff before. I have always been interested in reading his book 1Q84 – but it is like a million pages long! I’ll read it someday. But for now, I’m glad I found this short story because it really was a gem! Thanks for commenting and I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as I did!

  3. 1Q84 is amazing, if you like other Murakami’s novels, you’ll probably love it. And yes, it’s long but it’s very easy to read, it didn’t take me that long to finish it.
Oh, and great review btw. I haven’t read this short story yet but I’m looking forward to it!

  4. The First Mate has read and enjoyed this story already. He says that 1Q84 is not a good introduction to the author’s work. He says the common recommendation to start with is hard boiled wonderful and the end of the world. His personal recommendation is a wild sheep chase. Of course he says to read as ye will as they are all pretty good. Arrr!
